Q. What is Marmox?
A. Marmox is a construction board made of extruded polystyrene, which is totally waterproof, faced on
either side with a fibreglass mesh, which is embedded into a thin cement polymer mortar.
Q. What are its benefits?
A. Marmox is light weight, easy to work with and can be cut with a hand saw or knife. Marmox is non-toxic,
won't rot or absorb moisture and has excellent insulation properties.
Q. Is Marmox suitable as a tile backer?
A. Yes, Marmox is designed as a tile backer with the added advantage of being an insulation board as well and can withstand 30 tons per square meter when tiled over.
Q. How do I cut Marmox?
A. Simply use a Stanley knife or a hand saw.
Q. Why do I need Marmox Insulation Boards?
A. Marmox Insulation Boards will save you money by acting as a very efficient insulation barrier. Marmox reflects the heat upwards into the room instead of allowing heat loss down through the sub-floor below. In most cases Marmox insulation board exceeds the requirements of the NZ Building Code (Energy Efficiency H1 table 6 for heated floors).
Q. What sizes are Marmox Insulation Boards?
A. Marmox insulation boards come in 1250mm x 600mm sheet sizes. 6mm Marmox is the standard for floor insulation, 10mm is also available but you may well be governed by the thickness you can add to the finished floor height.
Q. How do I install Marmox Insulation Boards?
A. Over timber Marmox is glued and screwed directly onto the timber. Over concrete Marmox is placed using a flexible tile adhesive. Click
here for further details.
Q. Why do I need Marmox Tiled Shower Tray and Wall Linings?
A. Marmox tiled shower trays and wall linings are completely waterproof. They are quick and easy to install and when used with the Allproof Waste and any BRANZ approved waterproofing membrane Marmox is guaranteed not to leak.
Q. How do Marmox Shower Wall Linings compare to plasterboard?
A. Standard plasterboard offers approximately 1/6th the U value of an equal thickness of Marmox and yet is approximately 7 times heavier. When used in wet areas, such as bathrooms or showers, Marmox is totally waterproof whereas plasterboard will absorb water.
Q. What sizes are Marmox Tiled Shower Trays and Wall Linings?
A. Marmox Tiled Shower Trays are available in several sizes and waste position and are easily cut down to fit most requirements using just a handsaw. For a full listing of tray sizes available click
here. Marmox Tiled Shower Wall Linings are 2400mm high x 1200mm wide and 10mm thick - designed to butt directly to plaster board.
Q. How do I install Marmox Shower Trays and Wall Linings?
A. Marmox Tiled Shower Trays are glued over timber and installed insitu in a concrete floor before the slab is poured. Wall Linings are glued and screwed directly to framing. Refer
here for further details.
Q. How do I Waterproof the Joints?
A. By laying a bead of polyurethane sealant along the edge of each board edge. When the adjacent board is butted up, the joint is made instantly waterproof.
Q. What adhesive should I use to fix Marmox?
A. It is recommended that a flexible cementitious floor tile adhesive be used. Solvent-based adhesives must NOT be used as these could cause damage to the Marmox boards. Refer
here for further details.
